And Then We Danced
15 (2019 Levan Akin ) 113 minutes
in Georgian with English subtitles Romance drama
A hit at the Cannes Film Festival, this freewheeling story of secret love, is electrifying in its physicality, as two male dancers in the Georgian National Ensemble must keep their relationship secret in conservative modern Tblisi. Merab and his partner Mary have been training for years for a spot in the National Ensemble, when the arrival of a new competitive dancer, rebellious Irakli, upsets everything, sparking both an intense rivalry and romantic desire that may cause Merab to risk his future in dance and his family relationships. Masterful direction and outstanding first time performances from real-life dancers provoked a 15 minute standing ovation at Cannes, as well as protests against the screening in Georgia. Superb dancing and touching performances defeat prejudice with overwhelming compassion. Definitely a film not to be missed!

Unlike anything else you are likely to see in 2020, this comedy/drama is set on a remote and bleak Scottish island where a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims. Described as a “wry, funny, poignant cross-cultural satire” it boasts stunning cinematography and is certainly pertinent to today’s world.
